Christian Haas

Alfred Wegener Institute / Christian Haas

Geophysicist and sea-ice specialist Christian Haas has been one of the early supporters of this expedition. As a senior scientist he works for the Alfred Wegener Institute. He represents the institute for both of the scientific programs to which the expedition is also contributing, CryoSat, and the International Arctic Buoy Programme.

His research interests are: sea ice thickness measurements, decadal ocean variability, sea ice remote sensing, sea ice physical properties, and sea ice biology. As a geophysicist, he wanted to perform field measurements in exciting environments. This is exactly what his current job offers and why he feels that Pole Track is an appealing undertaking. Why is he so supportive? Christian Haas answered, "The expedition can perform some important measurements to support our long term observations. Therefore, we are supporting Pole Track with Argos transmitters and data capacity for their buoys. We also support them by advising which measurements to perform and how to take them."

Christian Haas will be featured on this website as he reports on his campaigns in the field and shares some of his extensive knowledge on the subject of sea ice.
